For paddock and field reseeding, 100–150mm is usually sufficient — deep enough to bury surface vegetation and create a seed bed, but shallow enough to avoid bringing buried stones to the surface. Going deeper than 200mm is rarely useful on grassland and risks damaging soil structure below the working layer.

Will rotavating fix compacted soil?

Rotavating breaks up compaction in the top few inches but can leave a compacted pan immediately below the tine depth, especially on damp clay. For deeper compaction issues you’re better off aerating, sward-lifting or mole ploughing first, then rotavating only if you genuinely need a fresh tilth on top.

Can you rotavate wet soil?

No — rotavating wet soil smears the structure, destroys soil aggregates and creates a compacted layer beneath the working depth. Wait until the ground is moist but friable. If you’re squeezing soil into a sticky ribbon, it’s still too wet.

How to Rotavate a Field, Step by Step

If you’ve decided rotavating is the right call — you’re reseeding, levelling rough ground, or burying old vegetation — this is the order I work in on paddocks and fields:

  1. Check the moisture first. Squeeze a handful of soil: it should hold its shape without dripping or ribboning. Too wet and you’ll smear the structure; bone dry and you’ll get clods and dust.
  2. Clear the surface. Top or spray off dense vegetation a few weeks ahead, and walk the ground for stones, wire and dumped rubble — a rotavator finds all of it the hard way.
  3. Fix deep compaction before you start. Rotavating only works the top layer. If water sits after rain or a fork won’t go in, aerate, sward-lift or mole plough first — otherwise you’re putting a fine tilth on top of a pan.
  4. First pass shallow. Set the tines to around 75–100mm and take the first pass steady. Trying to reach full depth in one hit stalls the machine and tears lumps out instead of making tilth.
  5. Second pass deeper, at an angle. Cross the first pass at 45–90° and drop to your final depth — 100–150mm is plenty for reseeding. The crossing pass is what turns chopped ground into an even seedbed.
  6. Let it settle, then firm it up. Give the ground a few days (and ideally a shower of rain), then roll or harrow so the seedbed is firm and level. Seed sown into fluffy, freshly rotavated soil dries out and fails.
