A field swamped with Ragwort

As many of you will no doubt be aware, if Ragwort, Docks or Creeping thistles are not kept on top of and removed from your fields they can rapidly take over that field and before you know it, you have a field stuffed with weeds feet high and impossible to deal with

You’re got a field overgrown with Ragwort, what can you do? Often the first thought is spraying it and this will work if the plants are small and relatively immature. However, when the plants are large and have many leaves the poisons in weed killer are overwhelmed by the mass of the plant, and simply won’t work, or at best will have a very limited effect

You could mow them all down, then apply the weed killer, and this would work, temporarily… The problem when you mow the weeds is that the cutting and mulching action of a flail or a topper will spread the seeds and plant entrails everywhere resulting in a huge proliferation of ragwort or other weeds you are trying to get rid of!

So, what’s the solution then?

Here at Hampshire Paddock Management, we specialise in such things, our first step is to visit the property with an appropriate sized tractor and a machine called a ‘Flail collector’ Think of this like a very large version of your garden mower, the one with a collector bag on the back. This cuts down all of the weeds, but most importantly, it collects them all ensuring that there is no spreading of the weeds, and therefore no proliferation of weed growth

Once all of the weeds have been cut down and collected, it leaves weeds that are a fraction of the size of what they were, and most importantly, a size where a weed killer can easily deal with them. Spray the area, and your weed problems are solved
